يتحمل الرئيس دونالد ترامب مسؤولية الهزيمة الوشيكة للحزب الجمهوري في انتخابات التجديد النصفي بسبب سياساته وتصرفاته.
يسعى ترامب للبحث عن كبش فداء وإلقاء اللوم على ضعف دعم المرشحين أو غش الديمقراطيين أو غياب قوانين الهوية.
أضعف ترامب موقف الحزب من خلال إهمال التحالفات، والتركيز على مشاريعه الشخصية، والقيام بعمليات تطهير حزبية غير مجدية.
تسببت قرارات ترامب المتعلقة بالحروب، والتعريفات الجمركية، وتغيير المرشحين في ولايات مهمة، في إضعاف فرص الحزب في الحفاظ على الأغلبية.
