تعتمد الفكرة على تحليل المركبات العضوية المتطايرة التي تفرزها عملية التمثيل الغذائي وتتغير عند الإصابة بالعدوى أو الأمراض.
تعد منطقة السرة مناسبة لجمع العينات لأنها أقل عرضة للتأثر بالعوامل الخارجية مثل العطور ومستحضرات النظافة.
