تعد مدينة شرشال الجزائرية عاصمة تاريخية لمملكة موريطانيا القديمة التي امتد نفوذها من المتوسط إلى المحيط الأطلسي.
عرفت المدينة بأسماء متعددة عبر العصور منها إيول ثم قيصرية موريطانيا في عهد الملك يوبا الثاني.
تميزت المدينة كمركز للفنون والعلوم والتجارة وشيدت فيها معالم عمرانية كبرى كالمسارح والحمامات والساحات العامة.
كشفت الآثار والقطع النقدية في شرشال عن مكانة سياسية مرموقة للملك يوبا الثاني وعلاقاته الوثيقة بالإمبراطورية الرومانية.
