تعد انتخابات التجديد النصفي للكونغرس الأمريكي معركة على مستقبل الدولة ومكانتها الدولية وقدرتها على الحفاظ على دورها القيادي.
يرى الكاتب نيكولاس كريستوف أن سياسات إدارة ترمب تهدد ركائز التعليم والهجرة والأعراف السياسية والاجتماعية التي صنعت قوة أمريكا.
يؤكد الكاتب أن إضعاف منظومة التعليم والبحث العلمي وتشدد قيود الهجرة يهدد قدرة الولايات المتحدة على الابتكار والمنافسة العالمية.
يحذر الكاتب من أن سياسات ترمب وتضارب مصالحه تهدد النظام الدولي وتضعف التحالفات الغربية وتضر بالعملية الديمقراطية.

يقول كاتب أمريكي إن انتخابات التجديد النصفي تتجاوز القضايا الاقتصادية والمعيشية، لتضع مستقبل المؤسسات الديمقراطية والتعليم والهجرة ومكانة الولايات المتحدة الدولية أمام اختبار حاسم في عهد ترمب.
