لماذا تختلف ألوان دماء الحيوانات بين الأحمر والأزرق والأخضر والبنفسجي؟

يرتبط اختلاف ألوان دماء الحيوانات بتنوع البروتينات والصبغات المستخدمة في نقل الأكسجين وتكيفها مع البيئات المختلفة.
يحتوي دم الفقاريات على الهيموغلوبين الغني بالحديد مما يمنحه اللون الأحمر، بينما يحتوي دم بعض الكائنات على الهيموسيانين الغني بالنحاس ليظهر باللون الأزرق.
يتميز دم عضديات الأرجل باللون الأرجواني بسبب بروتين الهيمريثرين، بينما يظهر دم كيسيات البحر باللون الأصفر المخضر.
يعد دم أسماك الجليد القطبية أبيض شبه شفاف لافتقارها للهيموغلوبين، وقد تساهم هذه الدراسات في تطوير علاجات لأمراض نقص الأكسجين وفقر الدم.
