6 things to consider before starting a broiler, layer or noiler farm

Aspiring smallholder poultry farmers must understand that broiler, layer and noiler farming are distinct business models with different capital requirements, risk levels and market dynamics.

The choice between raising broilers, layers or noilers depends on several critical factors, including financial capacity, investment goals, market demand, risk tolerance and the amount of time a farmer can commit to the business. These considerations should guide the final decision.

Starting cost

Broilers require the least initial investment per bird, although farmers must restock every six to eight weeks. Feed costs must also be available upfront for each production cycle.

Layers require the highest capital investment. Farmers must feed the birds for about 18 to 20 weeks before they begin generating income through egg production. Housing, cages and feeding costs before laying make the setup roughly two to three times more expensive than broiler production.

Noiler chicken is a hybrid breed developed in Nigeria by Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery Ltd. for both meat and egg production. It is a cross between White Plymouth Rock and the Nigerian indigenous chicken and is similar to the Kuroiler breed found in India. Commercial sales of noilers began in 2014.

The startup cost for noiler farming depends largely on the size of the operation and available space.

Noilers are relatively cheaper to maintain in terms of feeding because they can consume some of the same feed as local chickens. Farmers can reduce commercial feed usage by about 30 to 40 per cent after the fourth week.

Cash flow

Broilers are ideal for quick financial returns. They can be sold within six weeks, making them suitable for farmers seeking rapid turnover or short-term income.

Layers, however, provide slower returns. Farmers earn no revenue during the first five months, but afterward enjoy steady daily income from egg sales for 12 to 15 months. This model appeals to those seeking stable and predictable earnings.

Noiler farming requires less cash flow pressure than broiler or layer production. However, farmers still need enough startup capital to cover feeding and management costs for about 14 to 16 weeks. Experts advise farmers to have at least 70 per cent of projected feed costs available before starting. Although noilers are cost-effective, inadequate feeding between weeks eight and 16 can affect growth performance.

Market demand

Before investing in any poultry business, farmers should study their local market to determine which products are in highest demand.

Broiler meat is highly sought after for ceremonies, fast-food businesses and household consumption. Demand usually increases during festive periods, although the market has become increasingly competitive.

Egg demand remains relatively stable throughout the year. Eggs are also easier to transport than live birds, while prices are generally more stable than meat prices.

In Nigeria, demand for noiler chicken is growing, particularly in rural and semi-urban communities. Much of the interest is driven by the bird’s distinctive taste. Noiler meat, often compared to indigenous chicken, is larger and meatier while retaining a rich flavour.

The meat is valued for its nutritional quality, firmer texture and deeper taste compared to broiler meat. It is increasingly popular among restaurants, frozen food outlets and households, especially for dishes such as pepper soup and stews.

Ultimately, farmers should focus on producing what sells quickly in their local market. If eggs do not move fast in an area, layer farming may not be the best option.

Risks involved

Broilers are particularly vulnerable between weeks three and five, when they are highly susceptible to heat stress, diseases and feed-related problems. Poor management during this period can result in losses of between 10 and 20 per cent of the flock. However, because broilers have a short production cycle, the overall financial impact may be limited.

Mortality rates among layers usually decline after 20 weeks. However, experts warn that diseases such as Newcastle disease, avian influenza and infectious bronchitis can significantly reduce egg production for long periods. Since layers require long-term commitment, farmers remain exposed to risks for a much longer time.

Noilers are generally considered less risky to rear. Dr Tansi Ali said: “Where exotic broiler genetics struggle with heat, disease pressure and inconsistent feed quality, noilers are built to survive and perform in exactly those conditions. They forage, tolerate temperature variation and require significantly less pharmaceutical support to remain productive.”

Time commitment

Broiler farming requires intensive daily attention for about six weeks. Farmers must constantly monitor temperature, feeding and water supply.

For layers, daily physical work reduces after the birds begin laying, but the commitment extends for more than 18 months. Egg collection, cleaning and record-keeping remain essential everyday tasks.

Noilers are easier to manage than broilers because they can forage for food, reducing feeding costs and labour. However, they still require proper daily care, including clean housing, adequate water supply and routine vaccination.

Broilers require deep litter housing with proper ventilation.

Layers, on the other hand, require battery cages, nest boxes and efficient manure management systems.

Noilers require simpler housing conditions. Battery cages are unnecessary, while heating is usually not needed after the fourth week. Deep litter housing with adequate ventilation is often sufficient.
