APAD probes LRT derailment near Chan Sow Lin, demands full report from Rapid KL

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 — The Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has launched a thorough investigation into the Light Rail Transit (LRT) train derailment near the Chan Sow Lin station on Thursday morning, warning of strict enforcement action if negligence is found.

The incident, which occurred on the Ampang-Sri Petaling line, resulted in significant service disruptions. Rapid KL confirmed the derailment after videos of the stalled train began circulating on social media.

APAD said it conducted a site inspection immediately after the incident, led by its director-general, alongside representatives from the Rail Enforcement and Rail Planning divisions, to assess the situation and ensure immediate remedial actions were taken by the operator.

A second inspection was held at 3.00 pm yesterday, involving officials from the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to review the investigation’s initial progress, operational safety levels, and necessary follow-up measures.

“In line with the directive of the transport minister, APAD has immediately opened an investigation file to conduct a thorough probe into this incident,” the agency said in a statement today.

The investigation aims to identify the root cause of the derailment, focusing on compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs), asset maintenance, safety systems, and train operations.

APAD said that the safety of users, the reliability of the rail system, and the integrity of public transport services “cannot be compromised under any circumstances.”

The operator has been directed to submit a full report as soon as possible. APAD will review this report in detail before conducting further interviews and examinations to determine if there were elements of non-compliance, negligence, or violations of operating licence conditions.

Should any violations be found, enforcement action may be taken under Section 101 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010.

Furthermore, the investigation covers potential negligence under Sections 202 and 128 of the same Act. This includes possible action against any individual found to have failed in their responsibilities or acted negligently to the extent of compromising rail safety.

APAD added that it will continue to work closely with the MOT and relevant agencies to ensure that public confidence in the rail system is maintained.
