Portugal considers reopening its embassy in Iraq

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein and his Portuguese counterpart, Paulo Rangel, discussed on Saturday reopening the Portuguese embassy in Baghdad.

During a phone conversation, the two sides discussed approaches to develop bilateral relations between Iraq and Portugal, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry.

The two ministers also addressed Iraq-EU ties and how to enhance and grow them, highlighting Portugal’s support for Iraqi efforts in this respect.

The discussion focused on prospects for international cooperation, as well as the developments in the region and the impact of military operations in the Strait of Hormuz on regional stability, as well as the global economy.

Rangel extended an official invitation to Hussein to visit Portugal next month for further discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.

The Portuguese Embassy in Baghdad was officially shut down in 2007 due to growing security challenges during the war in Iraq, as well as severe economic and financial issues in Portugal at the time.

Portugal currently has no functioning diplomatic missions in Iraq. Iraqi residents and tourists get consular services from the Embassy of Portugal in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, which holds jurisdiction over Iraq.
