Election Commission’s turn: Johor speaker submits dissolution proclamation
JOHOR BARU: The Election Commission (EC) can now proceed with setting key dates for Johor’s 16th state election after receiving the proclamation dissolving the state legislative assembly from Speaker Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi.
Earlier, EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun said the commission would convene a special meeting once it received official notification of the assembly’s dissolution.
Puad confirmed that the proclamation had been submitted to the EC following consent from Johor Regent Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
The submission enables the commission to begin preparations for the state election, including determining nomination day, early voting and polling day.
In a gazette notification dated June 1, Tunku Ismail proclaimed the dissolution of the Johor State Legislative Assembly, paving the way for a fresh electoral mandate.
The 15th Johor State Legislative Assembly was officially dissolved yesterday after Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced that he had obtained the Regent’s consent.
The state election must be held within 60 days of the dissolution.
Johor will be administered by a caretaker government until a new state administration is formed following the election.
All 56 state seats will be contested.
