Egypt celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity
Egypt celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity 2026 under the theme “Local Action with Global Impact” via the Ministry of Local Development and Environment’s digital platforms to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
Minister of Local Development and Environment Manal Awad stressed biodiversity is vital for sustainable development, noting ministry efforts in expanding nature reserve programmes and protecting endangered species.
Awad added that the theme highlights the role of local communities, calling for joint governmental and civil society action to ensure ecosystem sustainability.
She pointed out that the updated National Biodiversity Strategy launched last March with the UNDP and Global Environment Facility features 21 targets to protect ecosystems and expand nature-based climate solutions.
She explained Egypt is integrating biodiversity into development plans and promoting ecotourism in nature reserves.
The minister emphasised raising environmental awareness among youth to boost community participation.
Digital activities include publishing awareness videos and infographics on nature conservation and sustainable practices.
Celebrated every May 22, the day raises global awareness and marks the adoption of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
Enacted after the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, the convention aims for biodiversity conservation and fair resource sharing among its 196 member states.
