Tengku Zafrul to testify in Muhyiddin RM232.5m graft trial, money laundering case on July 6

KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — Former finance minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz will be called as the 11th prosecution witness in the corruption and money laundering trial involving Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

According to Astro Awani, deputy public prosecutor Datuk Wan Shaharuddin Wan Ladin informed the High Court that Tengku Zafrul will take the stand at the next proceedings fixed for July 6, after the 10th prosecution witness, R. Harshini, completed her testimony before judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin.

The court was also told that the prosecution had concluded its opening stage of the case proceedings.

The judge noted that the case has attracted public attention due to its high-profile nature and expressed hope that the prosecution stage could be completed before September 14, before moving into the next phase of submissions.

The court also emphasised the need for the trial to proceed smoothly without unnecessary delay.

Proceedings have been scheduled over 29 days, with hearings set from March to August, including additional dates in July and August.

The trial is set to continue on July 6–17, July 27–29, August 17–21, August 26–27, and September 1–3 and 14.

Muhyiddin, 79, who was present in court, is facing charges involving alleged abuse of power to obtain RM225.3 million in gratification between March 2020 and August 2021 at the Prime Minister’s Office in Putrajaya under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009.

He also faces charges under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 involving more than RM200 million allegedly channelled into party accounts through financial transactions.

If convicted, he faces up to 20 years’ jail and a fine of at least five times the value of the gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher, while AMLA offences carry up to 15 years’ imprisonment and heavy fines.
