THINGS REMEMBERED: The Pendulum Wall Clock

The Pendulum Wall Clock was one of the most common household items in the past. It was made of wood and glass, with a swinging pendulum hanging beneath the clock face.

Unlike modern clocks, it worked mechanically and produced a loud ticking sound as well as a ringing chime every hour.

It operated with gears, springs and weights. Many families had to wind the clock regularly using a special key to keep it running. At a particular time, the clock struck a bell or gong to announce the hour. For example, it rang once at one o’clock, twice at two o’clock and so on.

In many homes, this wall clock was treated with great care because it was expensive and valuable. It was often placed in the sitting room where everyone could easily see and hear it. The steady ticking sound created a calm atmosphere and reminded people to value time.

Apart from telling the time, it also served as a symbol of discipline and tradition. Before mobile phones and digital watches became common, people depended heavily on these clocks for daily activities such as going to school, attending church, opening shops and preparing meals.

Today, the pendulum wall clocks are admired as antiques and decorative items. Many people still keep them because of their beauty, history and unique chiming sound. Though technology has introduced modern clocks, the pendulum wall clock remains an important part of cultural and family history.
