Airlines suspend Middle East flights amid growing US-Iran conflict risk

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Global commercial aviation corridors are undergoing a massive structural realign as international airlines rapidly cancel, suspend, or scale back operations across the Middle East. Driven by escalating regional tensions and the looming threat of a direct military confrontation between Iran and a U.S.-Israeli coalition, global carriers are rerouting transit networks entirely away from traditional regional hubs.

According to live aviation tracking data and updates published by Reuters on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, mainline intercontinental flights between Europe and Asia are increasingly bypassing Middle Eastern airspace. To capture the displaced passenger traffic and adapt to the volatile geopolitical environment, major Gulf-based airlines and international long-haul carriers are aggressively adjusting their operational capacities.

Fears of sudden airspace closures and missile threats to civilian aviation have prompted commercial carriers from Europe, Asia, and North America to extend flight bans across a broad list of cities, including Baghdad, Erbil, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh, Tel Aviv, and Beirut.
The updated carrier suspension list details extensive operational shutdowns lasting well into the autumn:

Airline / Aviation Group Destination Scope Suspension Duration & Status
Lufthansa Group (Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels, ITA) Baghdad, Erbil, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Beirut, Amman, Tehran, Riyadh Suspended through October 2026
Eurowings Erbil
Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Amman Suspended until June 22, 2026
Suspended through October 24, 2026
Air France & KLM Tel Aviv, Beirut, Dubai
Riyadh, Dammam, Dubai Cancelled until June 3, 2026
Suspended until June 28, 2026
British Airways & Air Canada Dubai, Doha, Tel Aviv Suspended until August 1 / September 7, 2026 (with reduced post-resume volume)
Pegasus Airlines (Turkey) Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Bahrain, Riyadh, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah Suspended until early June 2026
Aegean Airlines (Greece) Dubai
Baghdad, Erbil Cancelled until August 31, 2026
Cancelled until July 2, 2026 (Tel Aviv partial resume)
Japan Airlines & Singapore Airlines Tokyo–Doha transit
Dubai routes Suspended until late July 2026
Suspended until August 2, 2026
Other major global flag carriers, including Finnair, LOT Polish Airlines, Royal Air Maroc, and Malaysia Airlines, have concurrently enacted identical flight reductions or systemic cancellations targeting Middle Eastern transit nodes for the upcoming summer travel peak.

As western and eastern legacy airlines pull back from regional hubs, local Gulf entities are moving swiftly to absorb the massive supply deficit. Qatar Airways announced a major network expansion strategy effective June 16, 2026, scaling up its flight frequencies to over 150 secure international destinations to preserve global transit continuity.

Simultaneously, airlines operating far outside the conflict zone are modifying their long-haul schedules to cater to passengers demanding safe paths. Australia’s Qantas has intentionally increased its flight frequencies to Europe, deploying extra capacity on direct routes to Paris, Rome, and Singapore.

These non-Middle Eastern flight corridors provide essential alternatives for global business and tourism travelers seeking to avoid unpredictable airspace altogether.
