Abang Johari: Sarawak must develop local expertise in aerospace, satellite technologies

KUCHING, May 31 — Sarawak is laying the groundwork to develop local expertise in aerospace, satellite engineering, data analytics and future communication technologies ahead of its planned venture into the aerospace and satellite sectors.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the effort is crucial in line with the state’s plans to explore the aerospace and satellite technology sectors, which are expected to play a strategic role in future development.

“We are developing plans for a CubeSat-based nano-satellite targeted for launch by 2030. These Low Earth Orbit satellites will support real-time geolocation services, forestry monitoring, maritime surveillance, disaster management, and Earth observation capabilities.

“Therefore, Sarawak must begin preparing now to develop local expertise in aerospace, satellite engineering, data analytics, and future communication technologies,” he said in his message in conjunction with the 2026 Gawai Dayak celebration today.

Abang Johari said Sarawak’s technological ambitions are not confined to research laboratories or industrial parks, but are being translated into infrastructure and technological developments that directly benefit the people.

According to him, the state is also advancing its digital transformation agenda through the development of the Kuching Artificial Intelligence (AI) Data Campus in Tanjung Embang, covering an area of approximately 405 hectares.

“This campus will serve as a catalyst for the development of a regional AI Grid, strengthening Sarawak’s digital ecosystem while attracting high-quality global investments,” he said.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari said the Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) system, scheduled to commence operations in the fourth quarter of this year, will position Kuching as a leading model for hydrogen-powered urban transportation in Asean.

He said the project would also demonstrate Sarawak’s capability to integrate renewable energy, AI-enabled systems and advanced mobility solutions into a comprehensive urban ecosystem.

He also called on Sarawakians to remain united and support the state’s development agenda to ensure that the ongoing transformation creates more opportunities, improves living standards and secures prosperity for future generations. — Bernama
