Abducted Njeru school proprietor released

Moret Komuhangi

The proprietor of St Abel Primary School in Njeru Municipality, Moret Komuhangi, who was reportedly abducted by gunmen last week, has been released after spending two days in captivity.

Sources close to the family of Rotarian Boses Taremwa confirmed that Komuhangi regained her freedom on Saturday and was found in a frail condition. According to the sources, she was abandoned a short distance from her home in the Bujowali-Naminya area.

She was reportedly discovered by three teenagers, whom she asked to help her get home because she was too weak to walk on her own. Her release has brought relief to her family, parents, and residents of Mbikko, Bujowali and the surrounding communities, many of whom had been anxiously awaiting news of her whereabouts.

Unconfirmed reports indicate that the abductors demanded a ransom of Shs 80 million for her release. However, it remains unclear whether any money was paid.

Security officials in Njeru declined to comment on the alleged ransom demand or reports that family members and friends may have mobilised funds to secure her freedom. A thanksgiving prayer service was held on Sunday afternoon to celebrate her safe return.

Komuhangi’s abduction has heightened fears among residents of Bujowali and Naminya amid growing concerns over insecurity in the area. Residents have expressed alarm over what they describe as an emerging trend of armed criminal activity, including kidnappings for ransom.
