Academic input needed as police probe Tony Pua’s remarks on monarchy and Rukun Negara
KAJANG, May 26 — The police will call an academic expert on the Federal Constitution on June 3 to assist in investigations into a Facebook post by former Damansara MP Tony Pua, which allegedly touched on sensitive issues.
Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director CP Datuk M. Kumar said the expert’s statement was needed to obtain an academic perspective on issues related to the Constitutional Monarchy and the Rukun Negara raised in the post.
He said police have so far received 120 police reports nationwide regarding the case, while 95 witnesses have had their statements recorded to assist in the investigation.
“We will record a statement from a constitutional law academic expert on June 3 before the investigation paper is completed,” he said at a press conference at the Kajang District Police Headquarters today.
Investigations are being carried out under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for causing public alarm and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.
Police had earlier opened investigation papers and recorded Tony Pua’s statement at the Shah Alam District Police Headquarters last Thursday, following a social media post allegedly touching on public order.
In the post, he was alleged to have stated that the country practises a Constitutional Monarchy system in which the monarch’s powers are generally limited to certain aspects. — Bernama
