Awoniyi Explains Decision To Miss Unity Cup; Poland, Portugal’s Friendlies

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed that personal commitments informed his decision to withdraw from Nigeria’s squad for the Unity Cup and upcoming international friendlies against Portugal and Poland.

The Nottingham Forest forward said he remains confident in the quality of players selected to represent the national team.

Awoniyi has established himself as an important figure for Forest, despite injury setbacks and limited starts, highlighted by his milestone 100th appearance and a decisive brace in a 3-1 victory away to Chelsea.

Speaking with SportsBoom, the striker clarified the reasons behind his absence.

“I was supposed to be in the Super Eagles camp, but I opted out because of personal reasons I have to attend to,” Awoniyi said.

“We have lots of talent in the Super Eagles, so for me, everyone that is in the team for the June friendlies is as good as me, just as I’m as good as them.”

The former Union Berlin striker wished the squad well and expressed confidence that the invited players possess the quality to deliver positive results for Nigeria.
