Badawi Pushes for Regional Integration at D-8 Organization Meeting

Karim Badawi, Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, participated in the first meeting of the Developing Eight (D‑8) Organization for Economic Cooperation, which includes Egypt, Türkiye, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The meeting aimed at reinforcing cooperation between members and expanding joint infrastructure, according to a statement by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources (MoPMR).

The meeting took place on the sidelines of Baku Energy Week in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, with the participation of energy ministers from the member countries.

During the meeting, the ministers adopted the Baku Declaration on Energy Cooperation. The declaration provides a shared strategic framework designed to help member states navigate global market volatility, geopolitical tensions, and the rising demands of electrification.

Moreover, they reviewed the draft of the D‑8 Energy and Climate Center, which aims to strengthen institutional cooperation among the member states in the fields of energy and climate.

The meeting discussed ways to strengthen cooperation in the fields of petroleum, natural gas, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as electricity exchange, new and renewable energy, infrastructure development, and regional energy interconnection and integration projects.

In his remarks, Badawi affirmed that the energy sector remains one of the fundamental pillars for achieving the objectives of economic cooperation among the group’s member states, given the rapid global changes and growing challenges that necessitate enhanced coordination, exchange of expertise, and maximized utilization of the resources and capabilities available to the member countries.

D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation was announced in 1997. The objectives of the organization are to improve member states’ position in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, enhance participation in decision-making at the international level, and improve standards of living.
