Coach Aidil proud of Kuching City despite Malaysia Cup final heartbreak

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuching City coach Aidil Sharin Sahak described their season as a success despite losing 2-0 to Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) in the Malaysia Cup final at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.

Kuching held their nerve, giving the defending champions anxious moments throughout the match.

Their best chance came in the 61st minute when they were awarded a penalty, but Ramadhan Saifullah Usman failed to convert from the spot.

JDT kept cool and scored late goals through Marcos Guilherme and substitute Arif Aiman Hanapi to secure a fourth quadruple in the M-League, following victories in the Charity Shield, Super League, and the FA Cup.

“Kuching created history this season by finishing runners-up in the Super League and in the Malaysia Cup. We will make our debut in the Asian Champions League 2 next season,” Aidil said after the match.

“We are not a big squad, so achieving many positives, I would regard it as a good season.”

When asked whether it could have been a different story had Ramadhan scored the spot kick, Aidil said: “I am not upset, even the best players miss penalties.

“Overall the players worked hard and we created chances. The game plan was always to hold possession. However, JDT had more quality and took their chances well. They are a great team.”

Meanwhile, Kuching midfielder Petrus Shitembi described the season as amazing.

“I am lost for words. It has been an incredible journey for this club.

“To reach the final is a great achievement. We also finished second in the league, so what can I say. We have many young players, and with more experience, we will be better.”

Shitembi also advised Ramadhan not to be too hard on himself for the penalty miss.

“He had an amazing season. He played good football throughout the season. I hope he will continue working hard. I believe this young player will shine,” Shitembi said.
