Cops to record Azam Baki’s statement after Albert Tei allegedly threatened

KAJANG: Former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Azam Baki will be called in to assist in the police’s probe into businessman Albert Tei’s allegation that the former threatened him.

Bukit Aman criminal investigation department director M Kumar today said Tei’s lawyer lodged a report on the matter on May 13, claiming that a lawyer linked to Azam had warned Tei against exposing an alleged corruption scandal in Sabah.

“We recorded Tei’s statement the same week the report was lodged, while the lawyer involved had his statement recorded yesterday,” said Kumar at a press conference at the police headquarters here.

“Since we are investigating the case under Section 506 of the Penal Code (for criminal intimidation), we will call him (Azam) in to have his statement recorded in the near future,” he said when asked whether the former MACC head would be called up.

Kumar said the investigation papers would be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) for further instructions soon.

Constitutional law expert to be called over Tony Pua’s case

Police will obtain a statement from a constitutional law expert to complete investigations into former Damansara MP Tony Pua regarding his Facebook post on the Rukun Negara and constitutional monarchy.

Kumar said police had so far recorded statements from 95 individuals to assist in their probe.

The DAP leader is being investigated for statements said to be conducive to public mischief and improper use of network facilities.

In his post, Pua said the monarch’s powers were limited to defined aspects such as Malay customs, Islam, and constitutional roles like the appointment of menteris besar and approval for the dissolution of state assemblies.

He also said Malaysians do not “live in a system whereby the monarch can issue binding decrees which legislate all aspects of our lives”.

Durian Tunggal probe papers resubmitted to AGC

Kumar said police had resubmitted investigation papers related to the police shooting in Durian Tunggal, Melaka, to the AGC yesterday after complying with several instructions to complete the probe.

He said the investigation papers had been referred to the AGC four times, and the AGC issued further directives each time to obtain additional statements and clarify certain facts.

“Several instructions were given, for example, to continue recording statements from various witnesses to clarify certain facts,” he said.

“All instructions from the AGC have been acted upon, and the papers were resubmitted yesterday for further directions.”

Kumar said statements had been recorded from 63 witnesses as part of the investigation into the incident last November, which left three men dead.
