Couple killed in crash: Son recalls mother’s Aidiladha wish for dendeng, strawberries

PARIT BUNTAR: Sadness overcame Muhammad Zikri Sahbuddin as he recalled his late mother’s wish to eat beef dendeng and strawberries come Hari Raya Aidiladha.

Zikri had already bought the dendeng beef for his mother, Noraziyah Jahari, in anticipation of the upcoming festivities.

Noraziyah’s wish will never come to be, however, as she and her 65-year-old husband, Sahbuddin Bakar, were killed in a crash in Telok Medan, Bagan Serai, earlier today.

The couple were killed when their Perodua Myvi was involved in a collision with a Toyota Innova driven by a 46-year-old man from the opposite direction.

Zikri, the couple’s eldest son, said while he had bought the beef dendeng for his mother, Noraziyah had told one of his siblings about the strawberries.

“What saddens me most is that my mother had also asked my younger sibling this morning to buy strawberries because she was craving them,” he said when met at the Forensic Unit of Parit Buntar Hospital tonight.

Zikri said he had planned to take his mother out this evening, as it was their usual weekend routine.

He said his mother was cooking when he returned home, so he said he would rest for a while before taking her out.

“Not long after that, my mother said she wanted to go out with my father for a while, but she did not mention where they were heading,” he said.

He said he was later informed about the crash by someone who came to the house.

The remains of the couple were taken after the crash to the forensics unit of Parit Buntar Hospital for post-mortem examination and are expected to be buried tomorrow at the Titi Serong Mosque cemetery.

Sahbuddin was a retired civil servant and had last served as an ambulance driver at the Kedai Empat Health Clinic in Titi Serong, about 10 years ago.

Meanwhile, Kerian police chief Superintendent Jafri Md Zain said the crash is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death due to reckless or dangerous driving.

The offence carries a maximum jail term of 10 years and a fine of not more than RM50,000 upon conviction

Jafri said no arrests have been made so far as the Toyota Innova driver is receiving treatment at the hospital after complaining of chest pains following the accident.

“Further investigations are ongoing and whether the driver will be detained depends on the outcome,” he said.
