Dept explains who will be first to get new enhanced MyKad

JPN KAD PENGENALAN-PENGGANTIAN KAD PENGENALAN — Those who have applied for the new MyKads through JPN’s online system will be among those to get priority, says the department.

PETALING JAYA: Priority for the new enhanced MyKad will be given to those who hold plastic identity cards or the first version of the MyKad which lacks a laser-engraved ghost image, the national registration department (JPN) said today.

The new MyKad is expected to be launched on June 1 and will be issued in phases beginning with the registration headquarters in Putrajaya and 18 selected registration offices.

The starting date for the issuance and replacement of the new MyKad will only be announced after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim officially launches the new MyKad, the department said.

Priority will go to those who have applied via its appointment system, as well as holders of plastic identity cards, high-grade identity cards and the first version of the MyKad, which lacks the laser-engraved ghost image.

They must replace their cards with the new MyKad within the next three years, the department said today.

Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has previously stated that there is no requirement for MyKad holders to replace their identity cards immediately when the new version is introduced. More than 20 million Malaysians currently hold a MyKad.

Existing MyKads remain valid for all official uses, the department said.
