Driver to be charged over fatal Kuala Terengganu crash that killed youth

KOTA BARU: The driver involved in a fatal crash in Terengganu on May 19 that claimed the life of an 18-year-old youth is expected to be charged soon.

Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairudin said the 43-year-old self-employed man would be charged with reckless and dangerous driving.

He said police had recorded the suspect’s statement shortly after the accident.

“We have recorded the statement of the driver of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and investigations into the case are now between 60 and 70 per cent completed.

“Once completed, he will be charged under Section 41 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving,” Khairi said.

He said the suspect also tested negative for drugs.

It was reported that the 18-year-old electrical wiring worker was killed in a road accident involving a van and a car at Jalan Losong Feri in Kuala Terengganu.

The victim, identified as Wah Han Keong, died at the scene after a Public Works Department pole penetrated the van he was travelling in.

Police received an emergency report at 4.12pm regarding the crash involving a Nissan Vanette and a Volkswagen Golf GTI.

Preliminary investigations found that the Volkswagen Golf GTI, carrying five family members, was travelling from the Kuala Terengganu city centre towards the Terengganu State Museum in Losong when the driver lost control and skidded into a PWD pole in the centre of the road.

The vehicle then entered the opposite lane and collided with the van carrying the victim and his father.

The impact caused the pole to collapse and penetrate the van, striking Wah in the head.
