Drone strike hits cargo ship near Iraq’s Umm Qasr Port

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – In the Arabian Gulf, close to Iraq’s southern coast, a drone strike caused an explosion and fire on a cargo ship, according to Iraqi security sources, sparking new worries about maritime security in the area.

The incident took place about 40 nautical miles (74 km) southeast of Umm Qasr, which is Iraq’s principal port city and a vital entry point for commerce and petroleum exports.

Iraqi authorities claim that a drone damaged the ship, resulting in an onboard explosion that started a fire. No injuries were recorded after emergency personnel successfully contained the fire.

The ship was hit by an unidentified missile in the Arabian Gulf, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), which monitors maritime risks in the area.

Following months of hostilities between Iran, Israel, and the United States that have blocked shipping channels and raised security concerns across Gulf waterways, the strike coincides with heightened regional tensions.

Since the regional conflict escalated in late February, there have been more maritime incidents around Iraq and the Strait of Hormuz, and commercial shipping is more vulnerable to missile, drone, and sabotage threats.

The most recent incident is expected to increase worries about the security of ships operating close to Gulf and Iraqi ports, especially as Iraq tries to sustain commerce and oil exports amid a time of increasing instability.
