Dynamo secures FA Cup hat-trick in Botswana
Namibian defensive midfielder Dynamo Fredericks has won the Botswana Orange FA Cup for the third consecutive season after helping Jwaneng Galaxy FC successfully defend their title winning his 13th major career title.
Jwaneng Galaxy defeated Mochudi Centre Chiefs 2-1 in front of a packed National Stadium in Gaborone on Friday 29 May.
Mochudi Centre Chiefs broke the deadlock in the 27th minute, but Jwaneng Galaxy responded almost immediately, equalising just a minute later. The second half followed a similar pattern before Omaatla Kebatho scored the decisive goal in the 58th minute to secure the victory and complete a remarkable FA Cup three-peat for Galaxy.
This marks Dynamo’s fourth major trophy with Jwaneng Galaxy since joining the Botswana giants in 2023, while it was the 13th maojr title that he has won in his career.
He won the Botswana Premier League title during the 2023/24 season and has now added three consecutive FA Cup titles to his growing collection.
The 34-year-old’s football journey began in Namibia with the Collin Benjamin u17 Academy. From there, he earned selection for the Metropolitan Cosafa Cup squad, where he continued to develop his game.
He later joined Ramblers FC, where he played from 2008 to 2010 before moving to Civics FC in 2011. It was at Civics where he established himself as a regular first-team player, operating primarily as a right-back. During his time at the club, he won the NFA Cup.
In 2013, Dynamo signed for Black Africa FC, where he spent nearly a decade until 2022. His spell at the club was highly successful, winning four Namibia Premier League titles and two major domestic trophies.
He then moved to African Stars, where he added two more league titles before making the switch to Botswana in 2023.
His move to Jwaneng Galaxy came after an impressive performance at the 2023 Cosafa Cup. Then-Galaxy head coach Morena Ramoreboli spotted the Namibian international after he impressed during Namibia’s 1-1 draw against South Africa in a Group A encounter.
Dynamo’s first season in Botswana was disrupted by injury. After featuring in a CAF Champions League preliminary-round match, he suffered a serious knee injury that ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
The experienced midfielder eventually returned to action in August 2024 and has since enjoyed an injury-free spell while helping Galaxy continue their domestic dominance.
Despite winning the FA Cup, Dynamo admitted the season was far from straightforward.
“I had a very tough and challenging season. We started off well and were in the race for the league title, but we slipped out of contention. We then shifted our focus to the FA Cup, which we have now won,” he said.
“I’m very happy to have won the cup for the third time in a row.”
The veteran midfielder believes success is about more than simply collecting trophies.
“For me, winning isn’t just about lifting the trophy. It’s about giving your maximum effort both on and off the pitch. I am very happy to have won it and proud to be part of this team and this generation of players.”
Fellow Namibian midfielder Marcel Papama of Township Rollers FC finished as the joint top scorer in the Botswana FA Cup with three goals. He shares the Golden Boot award with four other players and is expected to receive a share of the P30 000 prize money.
