Egypt arrests woman for feeding stray dogs on public road
The Egyptian Ministry of Interior on Friday announced it has arrested a woman for feeding stray dogs in a public street—a highly unusual enforcement that comes amid an intensifying national crisis over surging stray animal attacks, RT Arabic reported.
In an official statement published on its Facebook page, the ministry clarified that the suspect was reportedly caught using meat waste products on a public road to feed stray dogs.
She then subsequently uploaded footage of the act to her social media accounts to solicit animal welfare donations from the public.
According to a security source cited in the statement, the consumption of these waste products leads to canine illnesses and heightens their aggression, thereby posing a direct threat to public safety and health.
The official added that these practices cause environmental pollution, noting that the suspect’s public fundraising campaigns were conducted without the mandatory permits from the relevant regulatory authorities.
The issue of stray animals continues to spark widespread controversy in Egypt.
It has prompted both official and public calls for systemic intervention, alongside a government-announced strategy aimed at controlling and reducing stray populations on public streets.
The scale of the crisis is underscored by an official report issued by Egypt’s Preventive Medicine Sector, which documented over 1.2 million cases of animal bites or scratches between January and September 2025 alone.
The Ministry of Health and Population data reveals an alarming upward trend, reflecting the continued proliferation of stray dogs and the escalating risks of rabies transmission across the nation.
