Ghalibaf reelected Iran parliament speaker

ALBAWABA- Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has been reelected as Speaker of Iran’s Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis), securing a new term at a critical moment for Tehran as indirect negotiations with the United States continue over regional de-escalation and security arrangements.

Iranian media, including Fars News Agency, reported that Ghalibaf won a comfortable majority in Monday’s parliamentary vote, extending his tenure for a seventh consecutive year. The vote took place despite parliament operating under limited conditions following disruptions linked to regional tensions and the chamber’s partial closure since late February.

Ghalibaf faced minimal opposition during the session, reflecting sustained backing from Iran’s conservative-dominated legislature and reinforcing his position as one of the country’s most influential political figures.

His reelection comes as Tehran remains engaged in indirect diplomatic talks with Washington aimed at reducing regional tensions following recent hostilities. Ghalibaf has played a prominent role in the negotiations, which have included high-level meetings hosted in Pakistan and discussions surrounding a proposed 14-point Iranian framework, ceasefire arrangements, and broader regional security issues.

Ghalibaf’s continued leadership of parliament was a sign of institutional continuity amid economic pressure, regional instability, and the ongoing political transition under President Masoud Pezeshkian. The position also strengthens Ghalibaf’s role as a key intermediary between parliament, the executive branch, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

A former IRGC brigadier general, Tehran mayor, and national police chief, Ghalibaf has long been regarded as a prominent conservative figure with strong influence across Iran’s political and security establishment. His reelection highlights his enduring political standing despite criticism from hardline factions skeptical of diplomatic engagement with the United States and continued speculation over his future role in Iran’s political landscape.
