Global Payment Disputes Hit 106m As Visa Expands AI Fraud Protection
Visa has disclosed that it processed 106 million payment disputes globally in 2025, representing a 35 per cent increase since 2019, as the company unveiled new artificial intelligence-driven solutions aimed at curbing rising fraud costs across the payments ecosystem.
The global payments technology company introduced six new and enhanced dispute resolution tools powered by AI and proprietary technology to help merchants, issuers and acquirers reduce fraud-related losses, improve efficiency and lower administrative expenses.
According to the company, disputes have remained one of the major friction points in digital commerce, contributing to growing operational costs for merchants and financial institutions while also creating frustration for consumers.
Visa explained that its Visa Dispute Resolution Network was designed to streamline pre-dispute handling, enabling merchants to resolve potential disputes before they escalate into chargebacks or formal claims.
The company noted that the enhanced platform would accelerate dispute resolution, reduce operational burdens and improve transparency within the payment system.
Speaking on the development, Vice President and Cluster Head, Visa West Africa, Andrew Uaboi, said disputes continue to place pressure on all stakeholders within the payments ecosystem.
“Disputes put strain on every part of the payments ecosystem, frustrating consumers while driving cost and complexity for merchants and financial institutions,” he said.
He added that outdated technologies were increasingly unable to keep pace with evolving fraud patterns, making it more difficult to detect fraudulent activities promptly.
“When outdated technology cannot keep pace, fraud goes undetected. Our expanded suite of dispute services gives clients the visibility they need to focus on what matters most: serving customers, launching new products and growing their businesses,” Uaboi stated.
