Govt plans Friday surau in Bukit Bintang for Muslim worshippers

KUALA LUMPUR: The government is working towards establishing a comfortable Friday surau in Bukit Bintang to make it easier for Muslims to perform weekly congregational prayers in the popular tourist district.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan said the area currently houses the Oasis Outreach Bukit Bintang centre, which serves as an operations centre.

In a Facebook post today, he said similar efforts were also being planned in other areas, including Chow Kit.

“If there are no obstacles, the Selangor Foundation Building located at the ‘Shibuya’ intersection in Bukit Bintang will be utilised as a surau or mosque.

“Efforts are also being made in Chow Kit and other locations, with the long-term vision of building a grand mosque to facilitate worship for Muslims, Insya Allah,” he said.

Zulkifli said his team at the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) had actively organised various dakwah outreach and welfare programmes in Bukit Bintang, Chow Kit and surrounding areas over the past two years.

“Alhamdulillah, I would like to thank the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council, Department of Islamic Development Malaysia, Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department and the Federal Territory Mufti Office for their swift action and efforts,” he said.
