Hadi denies PAS autocratic, says leaders don’t hold absolute power

PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said Islamic political leadership is based on justice, accountability, and syura (consultation), not blind obedience to rulers.

PETALING JAYA: PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today denied claims that the party promotes autocratic or theocratic rule.

In a statement, Hadi said labels such as “theocratic” are often used through a Western political lens to portray Islam negatively.

The Marang MP said Islamic political leadership is based on justice, accountability, and syura (consultation) instead of blind obedience to rulers.

“Islam is founded on a constitutional system that does not treat leaders as divine figures in governing political, economic, and societal affairs,” he said.

“Therefore, labels such as ‘theocratic’ are not part of Islamic political jurisprudence.”

Hadi also stressed that religious scholars are not beyond criticism, and that Islam forbids leaders from claiming divine authority or arbitrarily creating laws.

On Friday, Hadi said PAS was reassessing its alliance with Bersatu, including the possibility of contesting the next general election without the Muhyiddin Yassin-led party.

Bersatu expressed regret over Hadi’s remarks, saying all major Perikatan Nasional decisions should be discussed and decided through consensus in the coalition’s Supreme Council.

Bersatu’s political bureau said it was inappropriate for Supreme Council decisions to be challenged or disputed in a way that suggests a party president has veto power.

PAS assistant secretary-general Syahir Sulaiman subsequently dismissed allegations that PAS adopted a “dictatorial” approach in reviewing its ties with Bersatu.

Syahir, who is Hadi’s political secretary and the Bachok MP, said PAS makes decisions collectively through consultation, not solely at Hadi’s discretion.
