Iraq prepares emergency measures over rising Euphrates water levels

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) — Following notification from Turkey and Syria that they would discharge more water downstream into Iraq, Iraqi officials have initiated preventive measures along the Euphrates River.

Iraq’s water resources ministry and civil defense teams have reportedly started emergency preparations to handle any unexpected rise in river levels, especially in western districts along the Euphrates basin, according to official media.

The plans include coordinating with local authorities in the Al Anbar Governorate to remove impediments and unlawful encroachments inside the river basin, conducting round-the-clock field monitoring, and implementing quick emergency response measures.

These actions aim to reduce the risk of flooding and ensure that water flows remain under control as more volumes reach Iraqi land.

Due to decreasing river flows, drought, and upstream dam practices in nearby nations like Turkey and Syria, Iraq has long faced difficult water management issues.

Iraq, which has recently faced severe water shortages, desertification, and climate-related pressures hurting agricultural and drinking supplies, is susceptible to the current emissions.

Monitoring teams are still on the lookout for any emergency developments near the Euphrates, according to authorities.
