Johor election will not affect unity govt, says Umno veep Khaled Nordin as ‘era of political dominance’ ends

KOTA TINGGI, June 2 — Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the upcoming Johor election will not affect the dynamics of the unity government, despite the different governments at the state and federal level.

He said this is because the period of political domination is over and presently it is a new political era.

“The unity government is still there. We just have to accept the fact that the current situation is not the same as before.

“In the present new era of politics, it is not possible for any single party or coalition to dominate both.

“We have seen the way different states operate such as in Johor where it is a Barisan Nasional (BN) administered state, while in Melaka they have a mix of parties which is their right,” he told reporters after a car rental and taxi drivers programme at the Kota Tinggi Bas and Taxi Terminal here today.

Khaled Nordin, who is the Kota Tinggi MP, was commenting on whether the Johor state election will affect the administration of the federal unity government that he is also part of as the defence minister.

He explained that the issue now is mainly focused on explaining and accepting the current state of politics to the public.

“It is clear that the future our country’s politics has developed into such a system,” he said.

Yesterday, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced the dissolution of the state assembly paving the way for the state election.

The Johor state legislative assembly, which has 56 seats, was scheduled to end its term on April 21 next year.

The previous state election in March 2022 saw BN forming the state government after winning a supermajority of 40 out of 56 contested state constituencies.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) only managed to wrest 12 seats, with DAP securing 10, while PKR and Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) winning one seat each.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) took three seats, while the youth-centric Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) secured one seat.
