Luxury cars of ex-footballer, motivational speaker among 1,814 seized in JPJ op

KUALA LUMPUR: The road transport department (JPJ) has impounded a total of 1,814 vehicles in a special nationwide operation on luxury vehicles, including those of a former national football player and a motivational speaker.

JPJ deputy director-general (planning and operations) Jazmanie Shafawi said 915 vehicles of various brands, including Porsche and Lamborghini, were seized this year, while 899 vehicles were impounded last year for offences including drivers’ failure to renew their motor vehicle licences or road tax.

The vehicle of the former football player was seized early yesterday morning over three offences: a lack of insurance coverage, expired road tax, and the former player’s driving licence which expired last December.

“For the past five months, the former footballer failed to obtain insurance coverage and a valid road tax for the vehicle,” Jazmanie said in a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur JPJ depot last night.

Also present was JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan.

Meanwhile, the motivational speaker’s vehicle, estimated to be worth more than RM500,000, was seized on the Damansara-Puchong Expressway after authorities found that the road tax had expired nearly a month earlier.

The vehicle also lacked insurance coverage and was still displaying an old registration number despite having undergone an interchange.

Jazmanie said failure to renew one’s road tax was a serious offence under the Road Transport Act 1987, and that JPJ would not compromise in taking action against the vehicles involved.

“The usual excuse given by vehicle owners is that they overlooked the renewal, but that is unreasonable because the MyJPJ application issues reminder notifications when a vehicle’s licence is about to expire,” he said.

He also said that using a vehicle without valid road tax posed a significant risk to both the owner and other road users because the vehicle would not be covered by insurance in the event of an accident.
