Malaysian Armed Forces expresses gratitude to TMJ for ‘unwavering support’ amid military training row

KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) has expressed its “highest gratitude” to the Regent of Johor (TMJ), Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, for his public backing of military exercises and his commitment to the welfare of veterans.

In a statement today, MAF said the regent’s support reflects a “strong strategic synergy” between the royal institution, the Johor state government, and the military.

The force described Johor’s willingness to provide space and cooperation for military drills as the “lifeblood” of its continued operational readiness.

Yesterday, Tunku Ismail had chided critics for attempting to use military institutions for “personal interests” or to generate “social media attention.”

Addressing the necessity of these exercises, MAF today affirmed that it operates strictly within the bounds of the law and that national defence mandates transcend geographical boundaries.

“Consistent and realistic field training is an absolute prerequisite for enhancing the tactical competency of MAF personnel, while ensuring that the nation’s defence readiness is maintained at the highest level,” it said.

The National Security Council (NSC) had previously assured the public that all military maneuvers follow strict safety and coordination protocols to minimise disruption to local communities.

The military also highlighted the Regent’s assurance that Johor’s doors remain open to MAF veterans. The force noted that such recognition for those who have completed their service serves as a significant morale booster for currently serving personnel.

“Recognition of the contributions of Warriors who have completed their service proves that their sacrifices remain truly valued,” MAF added.

Reiterating its core mission, MAF said it remains professional and will continue to prioritise the safety of the Rakyat and national sovereignty.

The force also said that its primary objectives remain under the auspices of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, the Supreme Head of Malaysia.

“The MAF will continue to focus its resources and expertise on core national defence objectives… placing the safety of the people and the sovereignty of the nation as its absolute priority,” the statement concluded.
