MCMC to increase public awareness of responsible sharing of videos of crimes

KUALA LUMPUR: The Communications Ministry will intensify digital literacy efforts to raise public awareness on the responsible uploading and sharing of videos involving crimes on social media.

Its minister, Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission will undertake the effort.

He said the public must exercise caution when sharing such content, adding that while users are free to post online, they must be mindful that certain materials could interfere with ongoing police investigations.

“We take note of this because criminal investigations are under the police and MCMC, and the Communications Ministry is ready to help increase awareness and understanding among the public, especially social media users, of what they can (post) and (what they) should be careful about.

“In the circulation of disturbing videos, there are sometimes elements that may offend victims’ families, and we need to be sensitive to that.

“In the media industry, there are clear boundaries (and ethics) to protect the dignity of victims, for example. But for the public, maybe they are not fully aware of these matters.

“So, insyaAllah, we will enhance digital literacy to ensure social media users understand that while they may post content, in certain cases involving investigations, we do not want it to be affected,” he said.

He said this after the closing ceremony of the Youth Festival held in conjunction with the National Youth Day 2026 celebration for the Federal Territories here today.

Yesterday, federal police Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department director Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin reminded the public to act more responsibly before uploading video recordings related to crimes or misconduct on social media, as such actions could affect police investigations and carry legal implications.

He had said some people are overly eager for attention on social media without understanding the impact on investigations conducted by authorities.

He had also advised the public to channel information or recordings related to misconduct directly to the police to ensure appropriate action can be taken.
