Messi Suffers Injury Scare Ahead Of World Cup Title Defence

Argentina’s talismanic captain, Lionel Messi, gave fans a significant fright after an injury scare during Inter Miami’s Major League Soccer clash on Sunday. The superstar forward requested to be substituted, raising immediate concerns just weeks before the World Cup.

Inter Miami manager, Guillermo Hoyos, later moved to allay fears, suggesting the 38-year-old’s withdrawal against the Philadelphia Union was purely a precautionary measure. Hoyos cited the challenging pitch conditions in a sodden Miami as the primary reason for Messi’s early departure.

The reigning 2022 World Cup winner left the field in the 73rd minute of the match, having clutched the back of his left leg. Despite the initial alarm, Messi appeared to walk normally as he made his way directly down the tunnel, offering a glimmer of hope to anxious supporters.

While Messi has not formally confirmed his intention to represent the defending champions at the upcoming World Cup, which kicks off on 11th June, he is overwhelmingly expected to feature. This would mark a record-equalling sixth appearance at the finals for the Argentine maestro, with the tournament being co-hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Argentina’s provisional squad is anticipated to be announced next week, with their opening fixture scheduled against Algeria on 16th June. Since his high-profile move to Miami in 2023, the eight-time Ballon d’Or recipient has meticulously managed his playing time, yet has still experienced periods sidelined due to recurring hamstring issues. This latest incident will undoubtedly prompt close monitoring from the Argentine national team’s medical staff.
