MIC set to contest 4 seats in Johor state election

voting
The Johor legislative assembly was dissolved yesterday, paving the way for the 16th state election to be held within the next 60 days.

PETALING JAYA: Johor MIC chairman K Raven Kumar says MIC is looking to contest four seats at the state election.

“Yes, we will (contest four seats),” he said when asked to confirm reports on the matter.

The Tenggaroh assemblyman said the party will reveal the seats it hopes to contest in due course.

MIC currently has three seats in Johor.

Besides Tenggaroh, the other two seats are held by N Saraswati (Kemelah) and R Vidyananthan (Kahang).

MIC’s S Suppayah lost the battle for the Bukit Batu seat to Pakatan Harapan’s Arthur Chiong by 137 votes.

The Johor legislative assembly was dissolved yesterday, paving the way for the 16th state election to be held within the next 60 days.

Barisan Nasional (BN) won 40 of the 56 seats contested in the last state election in 2022 to form the state government.

Pakatan Harapan won 12 seats, while Perikatan Nasional secured three and Muda one.

BN has said it will contest all 56 seats at this year’s polls, with BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi stating that the coalition is aiming to win over 40 seats.

Earlier today, Umno information chief Azalina Othman Said called on BN component parties to field new faces as candidates in the upcoming Johor polls, particularly in constituencies with a high percentage of young voters.

In a Bernama report, she said the move would positively impact BN by creating opportunities for the candidates to emerge as the party’s future leaders at the state assembly.

“We have to accept the reality that many young people are now voters. Even in my constituency, about 40% of the electorate are young voters,” said the Pengerang MP.
