Milo J becomes youngest-ever Gardel de Oro winner

Nineteen-year-old Milo J became the youngest artist to win the most important prize for music recordings in Argentina, the Gardel de Oro, on Tuesday night. 

The artist was awarded for his album La vida era más corta, released last September with rave reviews and sales.

He also was the big winner of the night, taking home awards for a grand total of 12 categories.

The award is named after tango legend Carlos Gardel and is voted on by members of the music industry, musicians, and music critics. Premios Gardel a la Música — commonly known as Premios Gardel — are presented by music recording chamber CAPIF to recognize the best of Argentine music of each year in a diversity of genres and categories.

First awarded in 1999, former winners of Gardel de Oro include legendary artists Mercedes Sosa, Sandro, Gustavo Cerati, Luis Alberto Spinetta, Andrés Calamaro, Fito Páez and León Gieco, as well as rock trio Divididos, pop-rock group Babasónicos, jazz band Escalandrum, female rocker Marilina Bertoldi, folklore singer-songwriter Abel Pintos and hip-hop acts Wos and Trueno.

The prize ceremony of the most popular categories took place at the Teatro Coliseo with a handful of live shows, and beforehand there was a “pre-ceremony” featuring more than 30 categories that were not included in the broadcast of the gala on TNT and HBO Max.

Live shows included Milo J, Trueno, Yami Safdie, Coti, Marilina Bertoldi and Angela Leiva, among others.

The most awarded artists

Milo J won a total of twelve prizes: Album of the Year (La vida era más corta), Song of the Year (Niño), Best Recording (Niño), Best Engineering (Niño), Concept Album (La vida era más corta), Urban Album (166 deluxe), Best Original Composition (Luciérnagas, with Silvio Rodríguez), Best Folklore Song (Niño), Best Hip-Hop/Rap Song (Gil, with Trueno), Best Urban Song (Olimpo), Best Urban Collaboration (Gil, with Trueno), and Best Short Video (Bajo la piel).

Runner-up was Trueno with five Gardel statuettes (Hip-Hop/Rap Album, Live Album, Best Hip-Hop/Rap Song, Best Hip-Hop/Rap Song, Best Urban Collaboration), followed closely by Ca7riel & Paco Amoroso with (Alternative Pop Album, Best Live Song, Best Pop-Rock Song, Best Long Video).

Both Lali and Charly García won two prizes each. Other winners were Cazzu (Global Music Album), Marilina Bertoldi (Rock Album), Maggie Cullen (Folklore Album), Miranda! (Pop Album), Luck Ra (Cuarteto Album), Ariel Prat (Tango Album), Nathy Peluso (Tropical/Cumbia Album), Gustavo Santaolalla and David Fleming (Best Soundtrack), Pipi Piazzolla 8Jazz Album).

Folklore group Los Nocheros received a Lifetime Award.
