Modi, Rubio discuss security and trade tries ahead of Quad meeting

HYDERABAD: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States (US) Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday discussed strengthening security and trade ties ahead of next week’s Quad ministerial meeting in New Delhi.

“We had a productive discussion on ways to deepen US-India cooperation across security, trade and critical technologies – areas that strengthen both our nations and advance a free and open Indo-Pacific,” US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said in a post on the social media platform X.

“We discussed sustained progress in the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and issues related to regional and global peace and security,” the Indian prime minister said on X.

The Quad, comprising Australia, India, Japan and the US, will “reflect on recent developments in the Indo-Pacific region and other international issues of mutual concern” during the ministerial meeting on Tuesday, the Indian External Affairs Ministry said on Friday.

Australian and Japanese foreign ministers Penny Wong and Toshimitsu Motegi, along with Marco Rubio, are also expected to hold bilateral meetings with their Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

The ministers are likely to discuss cooperation on supply chains for energy and critical minerals in view of the Middle East military conflict, according to Japanese media reports.
