Mohammed Abacha loses PDP Kano governorship ticket

Mohammed Sani Abacha, the eldest son of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has lost his bid to fly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flag in the 2027 governorship election in Kano State.
Abacha lost the party primary to Muhammad Bello Dalhatu ahead of the standard election cycle.
The Chairman of the party’s Governorship Primary Election Committee, Umar Danjani Hadejia, while declaring the result of the primary, said the exercise was peaceful and entirely hitch-free.
He announced that Muhammad Bello Dalhatu polled 2,233 votes to emerge as the winner, while Abacha scored 749 votes to finish as the runner-up.
Hadejia noted that the election was conducted in strict accordance with the party’s constitution, the Electoral Act, and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines.
“Having scored the highest number of valid votes cast, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Dalhatu is declared the winner of the PDP gubernatorial primary election and is consequently returned as the party’s gubernatorial candidate for Kano State.
“The Committee commends all aspirants, delegates, party officials, security agencies, and stakeholders for their maturity, cooperation, and commitment throughout the exercise. We call on all party members to unite and work collectively toward the success of the party in the forthcoming elections,” he declared.
Abacha had previously contested for the party’s ticket in 2023 but lost to Sadiq Aminu Wali following an intense legal battle between two parallel factions of the party at the time.
Prior to that, Abacha was on the ballot as the sole governorship candidate of the Advanced Peoples Democratic Alliance (APDA) during the 2019 election in Kano.
Meanwhile, a prominent philanthropist, Dr. Danjuma Adamu Dabo, has won the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the Bauchi South Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dr. Dabo, a grassroots politician, defected to the opposition PDP from the All Progressives Congress (APC) following intense pressure from supporters who insisted it was time for him to represent the senatorial district.
The primary, which took place in Bauchi, was witnessed by a mammoth crowd of supporters, party faithful, officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and representatives from the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, alongside state party officials and other key stakeholders.
Dr. Dabo was unanimously elected through a consensus option, and his election was subsequently affirmed by the congress committee in accordance with party guidelines and the Electoral Act.
His emergence as the PDP flagbearer has introduced a new dimension to the contest in the Bauchi South Senatorial District.
He will be contesting the seat against the incumbent Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, who is running on the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM); Yakubu Shehu Abdullahi of the APC; and Garba Dahiru (Salanken Bauchi) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in the 2027 elections.
