Mumbai’s MMRDA prepares to launch five major infrastructure projects including monorail relaunch
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority has advanced preparations for five major infrastructure projects set to transform connectivity across Mumbai.
The schemes span transport networks and cultural spaces, marking one of the authority’s most significant rollouts in recent months.
The Mumbai Monorail, suspended for eight months due to technical issues, is preparing to resume operations following extensive upgrades.
Preparations for the relaunch are in the final stages, though authorities have not announced an official launch date.
The upgraded system includes new rolling stock, CBTC-based signalling and fleet refurbishment, with certification from independent safety assessor Bureau Veritas already secured.
Metro Line 2B’s extension to Chembur Naka represents a crucial interchange point for the eastern suburbs. Work on the Chembur station is complete, and only the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety’s approval is pending, with operations expected to begin by June.
The new Chembur station is within 100 metres of V N Purav Marg monorail station, enabling seamless transfers.
The Santacruz-Chembur Link Road has reached a major milestone with its final BKC-Vakola arm achieving structural completion.
The successful launching of twin 54-metre composite girders over the Vakola Nallah bridge means the last remaining critical link between Bharat Diamond Bourse in BKC and Vakola is now structurally complete.
The entire 10.88-kilometre corridor will provide direct, signal-free connectivity between the Eastern and Western Express Highways.
The BKC Art and Event Plaza at Kalanagar has been completed as a multifunctional space for exhibitions and cultural performances.
Spread across approximately 10,500 square metres, the project integrates a 100-seater open-air amphitheatre, landscaped lawns with indigenous plantation, pedestrian-friendly pathways and a dedicated space for mobile food trucks.
Meanwhile, the Golden Nest Flyover in Mira-Bhayandar is undergoing safety assessments before its phased opening.
Up to Golden Nest Circle, the flyover provides a full 2+2 lane grade-separated configuration to maximise vehicular dispersion and ease junction-level congestion.
