NIS Raises Alarm Over Rising Human Trafficking, Irregular Migration Schemes
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has alerted Nigerians to the increasing cases of fraudulent migration schemes and irregular cross-border activities being perpetrated by criminal networks across the country.
In a statement issued on by the service public relations officer, DCI A.S Akinlabi, the Service warned that vulnerable individuals, particularly young women and girls, are being targeted through fake promises of jobs, education, and better opportunities abroad.
According to the NIS, many of the victims eventually end up in forced labour, human trafficking, and other forms of exploitation.
“The Service warns that criminal networks often target vulnerable individuals, particularly young women and girls, through deceptive offers of employment, education, and opportunities for a better life abroad,” the statement said.
The Service stressed that it is illegal to leave Nigeria without valid travel documents, including passports and visas, warning that such actions expose individuals to grave dangers.
It further stated that no genuine travel process bypasses official immigration procedures or authorized border posts.
The NIS also cautioned Nigerians against accepting unsolicited sponsorships, travel fares, or assistance from unknown or unverified persons claiming to facilitate overseas travel.
It advised members of the public to verify the authenticity of travel and recruitment offers through appropriate government channels and avoid dealing with agents promoting irregular migration.
The statement urged Nigerians to report suspicious activities or individuals involved in such schemes to the nearest NIS office or relevant security agencies.
The Service also called on parents, guardians, and community leaders to educate young people about the dangers associated with irregular migration and trafficking in persons.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains resolute in its commitment to securing Nigeria’s borders and protecting citizens from exploitation,” the statement added.
The Service encouraged the public to contact the NIS through its verified communication channels for clarification or assistance regarding travel-related matters.
