Ojude Oba festival redefining African cultural identity, says FCMB
FCMB Group Plc has described the annual Ojude Oba Festival as a powerful symbol of Africa’s evolving cultural identity, saying the century-old celebration now reflects a growing cultural confidence among Africans at home and in the diaspora.
Speaking ahead of the 2026 edition of the festival, the financial institution said the increasing global attention on Ojude Oba highlights how younger generations are reconnecting with heritage, tradition and indigenous identity in ways that are modern, aspirational and globally relevant.
The 2026 festival, themed “Celebrating the Legacy of Oba Sikiru Adetona,” is scheduled to hold on May 29 in Ijebu-Ode and will honour the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, whose reign transformed the festival into an internationally recognised cultural event.
According to FCMB’s Divisional Head of Corporate Affairs, Diran Olojo, Ojude Oba has evolved beyond a traditional gathering into a global cultural platform that projects African identity with pride.
“Ojude Oba is no longer simply a cultural festival,” Olojo said, adding, “It has become a powerful expression of how African culture continues to evolve without losing its roots. What we are witnessing is the meeting point of heritage and modern identity, where tradition is not preserved as nostalgia, but lived confidently and projected to the world.”
Originally established more than a century ago as a gathering of Muslim converts paying homage to the Awujale, the festival has grown into one of Africa’s most celebrated cultural spectacles. It features colourful regberegbe age-grade processions, elaborate traditional attire, horse-riding displays and participation by prominent warrior families in Ijebuland.
FCMB noted that it has maintained a relationship with the festival for over two decades, long before social media amplified its visibility globally. The bank said its support reflects recognition of the role cultural institutions play in strengthening social cohesion, preserving heritage and stimulating economic activity.
The Group said the festival now supports a broad economic ecosystem spanning hospitality, transportation, fashion, entertainment, tourism, photography and trade across Ogun State and beyond.
FCMB also noted that the renewed popularity of the festival reflects how younger Africans increasingly embrace culture as a form of identity, style and self-expression rather than obligation.
Among the personalities associated with the festival’s rising global profile is Farooq Oreagba, whose appearances at the event have drawn widespread attention on social media.
The Chairman of the Ojude Oba Festival Organising Committee, Chief Olu Okuboyejo, described the festival as a symbol of continuity, peaceful coexistence and collective pride among the Ijebu people.
“This year, almost ninety age groups and twenty-five warrior families will participate in the celebrations,” he said.
