Pas–Bersatu ties: Review, reflection are normal process, says Hadi’s aide

KUALA LUMPUR: A review of Pas’ ties with Bersatu is a normal and routine process, says Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang’s political secretary.

Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman said the review was intended to assess all aspects of the relationship, both positive and negative.

He said the reflection and consultation period allowed for improvements, including evaluating what should be added, removed, maintained or replaced.

“Self-reflection is normal. A review process is also normal,” he said in a statement.

“For example, in the Budget and the Malaysia Plans, there are mid-term reviews. That is standard practice.”

Previously, ties between Pas and Bersatu were reported to have become strained after Hadi said Pas would reassess its cooperation with Bersatu following several actions by the party led by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, which were seen as undermining coalition solidarity within Perikatan Nasional.

The Marang MP was reported as saying the decision followed a series of actions by Bersatu that Pas found unsatisfactory.

Bersatu subsequently reminded Pas to respect and not interfere in the internal affairs of coalition partners, particularly on disciplinary matters and party administration.

In a statement, Bersatu’s political bureau stressed that all issues between the two parties should be resolved through internal PN channels and consultation to avoid misunderstanding and negative perceptions.

Syahir, who is also Bachok Member of Parliament, defended Pas, saying the party practised shura and consultation, with the Quran and Sunnah as its highest references.

He said Pas had checks and balances at every level, including over its spiritual leader and president, with no exceptions.

“Pas decisions are made collectively, from the grassroots to the central leadership and the Syura Council; not decided from Rusila,” he said.

“This is what ensures Pas remains guided and well-regulated, God willing.”
