PHOTOS: Sallah Celebrations Across Nigeria
Today, May 27, 2026, corresponding to 10th Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH in the Islamic calendar, Muslims across Nigeria joined millions around the world to celebrate Eid-el-Kabir, also known as Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice.
The festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son, Isma’il, in obedience to Allah’s command, as recorded in the Holy Qur’an.
According to Islamic tradition, as Prophet Ibrahim prepared to carry out the sacrifice, Allah, through Angel Jibril (Gabriel), intervened and provided a ram in place of his son.
The day is marked by special congregational prayers held at Eid grounds and mosques, after which Muslim faithful slaughter animals such as rams and camels as symbolic acts of sacrifice and devotion. Families, friends and communities also gather to share meals and extend acts of charity to the less privileged.
Across Nigeria, worshippers trooped to prayer grounds in cities and communities to observe the annual festival amid messages of peace, sacrifice, unity and national cohesion from religious and political leaders.
