PKR’s Wong Chen to step down as MDV chairman on May 31

PETALING JAYA: PKR’s Subang MP Wong Chen will step down as chairman of Malaysia Debt Ventures Bhd (MDV) on May 31 after the finance ministry decided to end his tenure.

Wong said he was informed by the MDV management that the Treasury had sent a letter ordering to end his contract as the government-linked company’s (GLC) non-executive chairman effective May 31.

In a Facebook post, the three-term MP aligned with former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli complained that the ministry did not even address the letter to him or reach out to him to explain the termination.

He claimed he reluctantly accepted the post in May 2023 as he initially disagreed with MPs serving in GLCs.

“I had not asked for the role but was directed to report for duty by the prime minister. Then I found out that I had inherited a government financial institution in a troubled state.

“My task as the new non-executive chairman was clear: to provide governance leadership. The very first thing I did was to cut out the undue influence of politicians and people in power.

“I didn’t return calls and WhatsApp messages from people of influence. Instead, I asked them to write me a formal letter if they had a request. Nobody did and after six months, nobody bothered me any more,” he said in a Facebook post.

Wong added that MDV recorded a profit of RM3.4 million in 2024, before more than doubling this figure the following year.

Wong was appointed chairman of MDV, a GLC providing financing facilities to the information and communications technology sector, on May 23, 2023.

The MP had said then that he was qualified for the post since he used to be a corporate lawyer.

Wong was among the current PKR MPs who attended Rafizi and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad’s press conference where the pair announced their new political party, Parti Bersama Malaysia.

While he remains in PKR, he has said that he would stand as a Bersama candidate if he were to contest in the next general election.
