Remand of balloon trader in expo gas blast case extended
SUNGAI PETANI: The remand order for a balloon trader suspected of involvement in a gas cylinder explosion at an expo site near Dataran Jam Besar last Thursday, which claimed one life, has been extended by one day to assist investigations.
The 38-year-old suspect from Kuala Kedah was brought to the Sungai Petani magistrate’s court this morning for an application to extend the remand.
Magistrate Muhammad Saiful Akmal Mohd Razi allowed the suspect to be remanded for an additional day.
It is understood that the suspect is expected to be charged in court tomorrow.
The case is being investigated under Section 304A of the Penal Code for causing death by negligence.
Meanwhile, the suspect’s 18-year-old employee, who was also detained earlier, has been released on police bail.
Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said police will issue a statement this afternoon on developments in the investigation.
It was previously reported that in the incident at about 7.53pm last Thursday, a suspected gas cylinder explosion occurred at an expo site near Dataran Jam Besar, killing one man at the scene and injuring three others.
The victim who died was identified as Azmi, 42, from Permatang Pasir, while the injured victims were aged 15, 36 and 49.
