Supertanker transporting Iraqi crude crosses Hormuz to China

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – A supertanker carrying Iraqi crude oil to China has departed from the Arabian Gulf and crossed the US blockade line into the Arabian Sea, as negotiations persist to resolve the US-Iran conflict and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The giant oil tanker Eagle Verona, which is transporting over two million barrels of Iraqi oil to China, entered the Arabian Sea from the Gulf of Oman on Sunday, according to Bloomberg.

According to reports, the vessel traversed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, adhering to a route that was authorized by Iran.

Last week, the government in Iraq stepped in to facilitate the passage of the oil tanker Agios Phanourios I, which is carrying Iraqi crude oil, through the Strait of Hormuz. The step occurred despite the increased Iranian security measures in place for vessels navigating the waterway.

According to Reuters, the tanker, which was heading for Vietnam, had been trapped on the coast of Dubai since late April until being permitted to pass on May 10 following direct contact with the Iranian authorities.

Iran employs a multi-stage system for ships navigating the Strait of Hormuz. This system includes thorough security inspections conducted by the Revolutionary Guard and specific arrangements with certain countries.

Ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen dramatically since the region’s current crisis, with the number of transiting vessels dropping from around 120-140 per day prior to the war to around 60 between April 18 and May 6.
