Traffic slows on highways in peninsula as holiday volume exceeds two million vehicles

Malay Mail

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Congestion is building on several highways connecting the north, south and east coast regions of peninsular Malaysia today as vehicle numbers increase due to the long weekend as Wesak, the King’s birthday and Aidiladha overlap.

Senior General Manager of Operations at PLUS Malaysia Berhad, Mohd Yusuf Abdul Aziz, said traffic on the North-South Expressway exceeded two million vehicles over the past two days, Berita Harian reported this afternoon.

“For the Northern Region, traffic is slow from Permatang Pauh to Prai, Penang before the Juru Toll Plaza, as well as at Hentian Sungai Bakap heading north, Jawi to Bandar Baharu, Taiping to Changkat Jering, Perak and before the Menora Tunnel towards Ipoh,” he was quoted as saying.

“For the Central Region, traffic is slow after exiting the Sungai Besi Toll Plaza towards the city centre, Gua Tempurung to Gopeng and Nilai to the Seremban Rest Area heading south. On the North–South Expressway Central Link (Elite), traffic is also slow from Putrajaya to Bandar Gamuda Cove and from Bandar Serenia to Nilai, while the Seremban–Port Dickson Highway (SPDH) is slow from Lukut to Port Dickson.”

For the Southern Region, traffic is slow at Hentian Sebelah Senawang to Pedas/Linggi and Yong Peng to Pagoh due to an accident involving two cars at kilometre 141.2 heading north, which has blocked the emergency lane. Traffic is also slow from Sedenak to Kulai and Senai to Kulai.

However, traffic on the Butterworth–Kulim Expressway (BKE), the Penang Bridge and the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) remains smooth.

Mohd Yusuf advised road users to plan their journeys and refer to the MyPlus-TTA app for the latest traffic updates.
