Truck Crushes Bus, Injures POS Operator in Lagos

A female Point of Sale (POS) operator sustained severe injuries on Monday after a 40-foot containerised truck lost control and crashed at Second Rainbow inward Oshodi area of Lagos.

The accident, which occurred along the service lane adjoining the Police Tactical Team Station, involved a heavily loaded articulated truck that reportedly overturned after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, who confirmed the incident said the truck fell on the commercial mini shuttle bus and also rammed into nearby roadside shops and commercial outlets.

Taofiq disclosed that the female POS operator, who was conducting business under a canopy within the area, suffered critical injuries to both legs during the incident.

She was immediately rescued and taken to a nearby medical facility by officers attached to the Police Tactical Team stationed in the vicinity.

He said LASTMA officials promptly arrived at the scene to manage traffic, adding that the the officers coordinated rescue efforts and secured the affected corridor in collaboration with other emergency responders and security agencies.

“The driver of the articulated truck was subsequently apprehended and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“The Authority recovery tow truck was deployed to evacuate the overturned truck and the damaged mini bus from the scene, while operatives of the Orile-Iganmu Police Division commenced documentation and preliminary investigations into the crash.

“Despite the severity of the accident and the extensive damage recorded, traffic movement around the area remained largely uninterrupted due to swift intervention by traffic management officials,” he added.

Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, urged operators of articulated vehicles and logistics firms to ensure proper mechanical checks of heavy-duty trucks before embarking on journeys.

He warned that negligence in vehicle maintenance, particularly failure of braking systems and other critical safety mechanisms, continues to pose serious threats to lives and public infrastructure across Lagos State.
